Bishop Ryan baseball sweeps Shiloh Christian

Ashton Gerard/MDN Bishop Ryan freshman pitcher Logan Merck throws a pitch Thursday during a doubleheader against Shiloh Christian at Corbett Field in Minot.

The Bishop Ryan baseball team hasn’t faced much adversity yet this season, cruising through its first six games.

Ryan faced plenty of adversity against a state tournament participant from a year ago in Shiloh Christian Thursday, however, yet still earned a sweep en route to starting the season 8-0. The Lions won both games 4-1 at Corbett Field.

“Shiloh is a good baseball team,” Ryan coach Fred Nelson said. “We saw them at state last year, so we knew it would be tough. It’s really good to get two close wins. We competed constantly throughout the whole game. We always responded when we faced adversity.

“To do that with two freshmen on the mound was big, they went out and threw a lot of strikes. If we do that, we’re going to be successful.”

Logan Merck picked up the win on the mound in Game 1, while Tyler Harbort earned the victory in Game 2. Alex Burckhard hit a home run in the first game, while Merck was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Burckhard drove in two runs in Game 2.

Ryan is back in action at 4 p.m. today against Velva/Drake-Anamoose in Velva.
