MSU track and field coach Melby resigns

Minot State Director of Athletics Andy Carter announced Monday that head cross country and track and field coach Stu Melby has submitted his resignation effective at the end of December.

“Stu has represented Minot State University and our athletic department with dignity and class for 13 years,” said Carter. “He is well liked by his peers and will be missed. We all wish Stu all our best for the future.”

Melby was the longest-tenured head coach on the Minot State athletic staff entering the 2017-18 athletic season.

Recently under Melby, Tanner Gust broke the school record in the hammer throw last season and he coached Cody Schmidt to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the javelin throw in 2014-15.

Off the track, the Beavers have been recognized by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for academic excellence during each of the last five seasons.

Melby coached two NAIA National Champions (Genevieve Binsfeld in cross country and in the indoor 3,000 meters), 14 NAIA All-Americans (seven in outdoor track and field, four in cross country and three in indoor track and field), three NCAA Division I All-Americans and eight NAIA All-American Scholar-Athletes.

Melby started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater Montana in 1993-94 where he served as the assistant women’s cross country and track and field coach. He was a volunteer coach for the Grizzlies from 1996-2000.

His first head coaching job was at Lindsey Wilson in Columbia, Ky. from 2000-04. At Lindsey Wilson, he was both cross country and track and field head coach.

A national search for the new head cross country and track and field coach will begin immediately.
