MHS cheer squad to compete for fifth state title Saturday

Ashton Gerard/MDN The Minot High School championship cheer team practice their stunts Tuesday at Central Campus. The team could potentially earn their fifth straight state title on Saturday.

The Minot High football team isn’t the only Minot team competing for a state championship this weekend.

MHS’ cheer team will be heading off to state as well to compete for what could be their fifth straight fall win for the squad on Saturday in Fargo.

The cheer team is tirelessly practicing this week, perfecting their moves as they will perform a 2.5 minute routine containing cheer, dance, tumbling and stunts. The team will additionally enter the “TIME OUT” cheer division, a five-member stunt group including a jump-off and all-around cheerleader.

“We have such a young team,” said cheer coach Sarah Seney. “”I think they’re ready. They just have to go out there and do it.”

Along with Seney, they are coached by Minot High cheer veteran Jkobe Wallace. Wallace cheered with the team for two of their state wins and joined Seney last fall. They are advised by Angela Speiser.

Seney has been with the team throughout their past four wins and thinks this fall will be no different.

“We’ve got four seniors that would have cheered the past three years and our whole varsity team is returning from last year,” Seney said. “All of our returners have done a great job of stepping up and helping our new ones.”

Seney hopes having the experience will push the squad to their fifth win.

Members of this championship team include Siane Alsadon, Grace Baggett, Madison Barker, Taylor Benjamin, Hailey Evans, Hannah Foss, Joslynn Gonzales, Carly Johnson, Hailey Lium, Harleigh Port, Bethany Presley, Madison Ritchie, Sylvia Salazar, Jaslin Short, Madison Stephens, Chloe Sterling, Caitlyn Summers, Bryanne Thorson, Chloe Watterud, Emerson Weeks, Jewliya Yunko, Makayla Zumbo, Emma Hollis, Hannah Schaefer, Dylan Allen, Ashley Beers, Jahzia Hollingquest, Taliyana Perez, McKenzie Perry, Zoe Schumann, Belle Stratton, Abby Stephens and Jaeda Sutton. This championship team is comprised of both the varsity and junior varsity squads.

Before they compete, the squad is heading out to Fargo on Friday to cheer their football team to victory as they go for their own state title. Minot High could potentially be coming home with two state wins this weekend, something the whole town can be proud of.

The cheer competition begins 11 a.m. on Saturday at Fargo South High School.
