Minot High School senior Alli McCoy signed a National Letter of Intent Wednesday evening to join the University of Mary women’s track and field team for the next school year.

“I choose U-Mary because I really enjoyed the staff and athletes there,” McCoy said. “I felt U-Mary was a really good fit for me academically. I chose track because it suited me better than the other sports. I was thinking about basketball, but I think track was the better choice.”

McCoy was a key contributor on the court last season for the Majettes basketball team and the junior varsity volleyball team.

“I think it was mostly the coaches,” she said helped in deciding to pursue a collegiate track career. “I really liked the atmosphere and they were really nice, welcoming and made me feel like I was good enough to run track there. So, I think that’s why I chose track over basketball.”

Having moved to Minot from Divide County last year, the now-senior sprinter has had plenty of success on the track with numerous district and regional championships at the Class A and Class B level throughout her high school career.

On the biggest stage, McCoy placed fifth in 100-meter dash and eighth in 200 meters at the state meet last spring in her first season with Minot High as a junior. Prior to becoming a Majette, McCoy placed third (2016) and fifth (2015) in the Class B 100 meters at state with Divide County. McCoy also took fourth at state in the 200 meters as a freshman in 2015.

“Track was definitely an individual sport for me in Class B because there weren’t as many people there,” McCoy said. “But, moving to Class A, it definitely turned into a team sport and I liked that a lot more because I had other people relying on me and there were people I relied on to get better. They pushed me a little harder.”

The spring season can’t come soon enough with McCoy’s foreseeable future now locked in.

“I’m excited and I think we are going to do really good,” McCoy said. “I’m ready for the season to start. I want it to be now.”
