Magi tennis falls a point short of WDA tourney title

BISMARCK — Fresh off winning the West Region regular season title, the Minot High boys tennis team were denied the WDA Tournament championship Thursday by a point. The top-seeded Magicians lost in the championship match 3-2 to No. 2-seeded Legacy.

Earlier in the day, Minot topped Jamestown 4-1 in the semifinals.

“After earning the No. 1 seed and a first round bye, we had a strong team effort to earn a 4-1 win over Jamestown,” MHS coach Scott DeLorme said. “A balanced approach as we were able to win at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and both doubles matches. Charlie Wentz won convincingly at No. 2 singles to get our first point and Rory Taney followed suit at No. 3. The third point came from our No. 2 doubles team who played from behind most of the set before pulling out the first set and finishing the match in two sets.”

That doubles team was made up of Zach Diehl and Gage Jaeger, and they got the win (7-5, 6-1) over Jamestown’s Isaac Mimong and Kaden Williams.

The title match against Legacy was an uphill struggle.

“We ran into a very good Legacy team who has the Top 2 players in the region, which kind of has you (down) 2-0 before you even start,” DeLorme said. “We got strong doubles play from both of our teams, but at No. 3 singles, Joe Wegner from Legacy played a very nice match to defeat Rory Taney who had a very nice win earlier.”

Minot won both doubles matches against Legacy to go 4-for-4 on the day in the discipline, but couldn’t pull out a single matches to take the tournament title. Meaning, the Magi will head to the state tournament as the No. 2 seed and will play Fargo South in the first round Thursday in Grand Forks.

Prior to that, however, the West Region individual tournament begins today and runs through tomorrow in Bismarck.

Majettes volleyball tops Williston 3-1

WILLISTON — The Minot High volleyball team picked up a 3-1 road victory over Williston Thursday night by set scores of 25-12, 19-25, 25-10, 25-6.

The win moves the Majettes back over the .500 mark at 12-11 overall (4-6 West Region).

“We came out strong the first set and Williston responded with some great defense to frustrate our hitters in set two,” MHS coach Sherry Carlson said. “We regrouped in set three and pushed through to finish the match.”

Minot senior Elise Klein and junior Sydney Beck each finished with double-digit kills with 14 and 13 respectively. Beck also had three aces.

Senior setter Brooke Nelson tossed up 33 assists and had 10 digs, while libero Rylee Terrel chipping in four assists and led the team with 14 digs and five aces.

Caitlyn Messner had two blocks and Kali Askvig finished with 13 digs and two aces.
