Metros split with Surrey

Alex Eisen/MDN Minot Metros pitcher Blake Smith fields a bunt in a North Dakota American Legion baseball game played on Monday at Corbett Field.

The Minot Metros moved to 4-2 overall on the season on Monday after splitting a pair of American Legion baseball games against the Surrey Blue Sox, losing 12-0 in Game 1 and responding with a 12-4 win in the nightcap, at Corbett Field.

“In the first game, I thought Blake Smith did a pretty good job of throwing strikes,” Metros coach Fred Nelson said. “But, we just didn’t show up other than that. We had two hits through seven innings, you are not going to win many baseball games when you play like that.”

Surrey scored twice in the top of the first inning of Game 1 and then plated 10 runs across the 5-6-7 innings. The Blue Sox collected 12 hits as a team with Breyden Lee and Chase Hiller each notching two. Lee also had three RBIs.

“I don’t think we were ready to play,” Nelson said. “We watched a lot of fastballs go by us, we couldn’t get our timing down and didn’t make adjustments.”

The Metros turned things around in Game 2, scoring 12 runs on seven hits in a five-inning game. Pitcher Jack Plemel picked up the win and had himself a game at the plate as well by going 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Metros’ Nick Murphy also had two hits.

Lee and Hiller picked up two more hits each for Surrey.

“We talked and told the kids we have to be excited to play baseball every time we come out,” Nelson said. “We had to prove that wasn’t the Minot Metros in the first game. So, we came out in the second game and Jack Plemel threw a lot of strikes and pounded the zone for us. And we started to hit the baseball a lot better.”

The Metros are back in action on Wednesday, as they travel to Velva for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
