Shootout spectacular for the Beavers

WILLISTON — Win No. 15 in a row came with the dramatics. The No. 1-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team needed a shootout to beat Williston State College, 5-4, after coming back from down a pair of goals in the third period.

The Beavers (23-2-1) held a 2-0 lead midway through the third period after goals from Jeremy Johnson and Dylan Gejdos, but then surrendered four unanswered goals to the Tetons (14-6-0).

A power play goal by Johnson with 7:41 remaining and another power play tally from Bryce Lipinksi with 5:20 left got the Beavers into overtime.

After the scoreless extra frame, MSU’s Morgen Martelle was the hero in the third round of the shootout.

The Beavers will be back at Maysa Arena today at 7:35 p.m. in a rematch against Williston.

Minotauros comeback falls short

CLOQUET, Minn. – Coming back from a 3-0 deficit was too much overcome for the Minot Minotauros Friday night on the road against the Minnesota Wilderness.

The battle between the top two teams in the Central Division, the Wilderness (22-15-4) edged out a 4-3 win after a hot start to defeat the Minotauros (26-12-4).

The Wilderness scored twice in the first period and early into the second period to grab a 3-0 lead. A pair of goals by Chase Springman got the Minotauros within a goal. But former Minotauro Colton Berg, who was traded last week to the Wilderness, scored to make it 4-2 with under four minutes to play in the second.

Minotauros got an unassisted goal by Jake Dittel for the only goal in the third period to make the final score 4-3.

The Minotauros stay in Minnesota to face the Wilderness again today at 7:05 p.m.
