The International Peace Garden hosts the 10th International Country Gospel Festival with a church service to be held at 11 a.m., with the festival and food concessions resuming from 1 to 6 p.m. Admission is a free will offering.

The International Peace Garden hosts a quilting show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Among the vendors and items featured are: the 183 Trading Company's button collection for sale, swap and display including button jewelry and more; Melinda Snell's quilts featuring flowers, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, coffee, wine and grapes. Designs are from watercolor paintings of Sonja Taylor; Pat Miller's quilts and vintage antique sewing machines.

Faith United Methodist Church's soup kitchen: Mondays, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at United Congregational Church, 430 N. Broadway.

The Lord's Cupboard Welcome Table food pantry is available Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 7-1st St. SE. The pantry is also available Wednesdays, 1 to 4 p.m., and Fridays, 2 to 5 p.m.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Minot Salvation Army is accepting applications for Back to School Supplies through Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Complete an application at The Salvation Army Church, 315 Western Ave., Minot. Bring identification of each child and proof of residence, along with report card, with you at the time of application. School supply/backpack distribution is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 22, at The Salvation Army 315 Western Ave. For additional information, contact Casie Schaan at 838-8925.

Surrey Senior Citizens will host a "Corn on the Cobb" feed to be held at the Surrey Activity Center on Friday, Aug. 22, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Menu is all the corn you can eat, plus smoked country sausage, baked beans, French bread, dessert, coffee and lemonade. Adults $10, children ages 6 to 12 $5, and under 6 are free.

A Spaghetti Benefit Dinner for Mel and Joan Diers will be held Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Bread of Life Lutheran Church, 1415-17th Ave. SW, Minot. Proceeds of the free will offering will be used for medical expenses related to Mel's cancer/heart treatment and their son, Dale, is continuing rehabilitation for a recent brain aneurysm.

SENIOR ACTIVITIES

MINOT COMMISSION ON AGING

Due to the ongoing renovation project, there will be no senior activities until further notice. This includes Bingo and exercise class. The new coffee shop is open to the public from Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The "Meals on Wheels" program will continue to operate on the south side of the coffee shop. Congregate meals will be served to those 60 or over Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the upper level of the coffee shop. For more information, call 852-0561. Footcare will continue as usual.

MINOT COMMISSION ON AGING MENU

Reminder: Meal reservations or cancellations are preferred by 5 p.m. the day before or 8:30 a.m. the day of the meal.

Monday: BBQ riblets; Tuesday: Tator tot hotdish; Wednesday: Salisbury steak and gravy; Thursday: Zoo Senior Safari: Hamburger patty; Friday: Pork chop.

REUNIONS

The Sisters of St. Francis will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Sacred Heart Province this year. Plans include a dedication at the cemetery and dinner at the Grand Hotel on Saturday, Aug. 30. Sunday, Aug. 31, includes a Mass and a reception at St. Leo's Catholic Church. All graduates, former employees, auxiliary members and friends, including nursing graduates and faculty from Minot State University, are invited. YOUTH EVENTS

KINDERGARTEN PARTY

Children who are entering kindergarten this fall are invited to the Minot Public Library's annual party that will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Imagination Station. Children will hear stories about going to school and will be given treats. Children must be pre-registered by Tuesday. Children may pre-register by calling the Children's Library at 838-0606.

TECH TUTORS: ONE-ON-ONE COMPUTER HELP FOR ADULTS

The Minot Public Library will be offering one-on-one computer help for adults at no cost this summer. This will be by appointment only, and the tutor availability will depend on the type of computer help needed. A Minot Public Library card is required to sign up for help. You may bring your own laptop or portable device if you wish to do so. Topic areas that can be covered are Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher or PowerPoint basics; Computer basics; Internet tips & searching; Email basics; Overdrive or OneClickDigital electronic format materials; Genealogy resource links; and our electronic resources. Contact the library at 852-1045 for information on how to sign up for a call back on the topics you are interested in, or visit the webpage at (minotlibrary.org) and click on "Technology Education" on the left-hand side to fill out the form for a call back. You will be contacted to set up an appointment.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

SENIOR VOLUNTEERS: North Dakota Senior Medicare Patrol recruits and trains senior volunteers to educate peers in local communities to prevent, detect and report Medicare, Medicaid and other healthcare fraud. The patrol is looking for volunteers to serve as resources and educators for Medicare beneficiaries. Training will be provided. Call Brenda at 858-4477 for more information.

MENTORS NEEDED: Companions for Children in Minot needs mentors for about 40 youth, ages 6-14, all from single-parent families. Mentors must be ages 18 or older. Mentors are people who will listen and spend time with a child or teen and incorporate them into their normal activities. MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLOTHING CENTER: Volunteers are needed to help at The Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch 2nd Chance Thrift Store in Minot to organize clothes, hang and tag clothes, help maintain store appearance, fill shelves and straighten the sales floor. VOLUNTEERS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Volunteers for Mouse River Players Community Theatre are needed throughout the year for lights, costumes, makeup, set design, general cleaning and other tasks. Call the Mouse River Players' office at 838-3939.

SENIOR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: People 55 or over are invited to join the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. RSVP also provides volunteers with a number of benefits such as supplemental insurance, transportation, and recognition banquets. Call Linda at 852-3799 for more information. SENIOR COMPANIONS NEEDED: Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota is seeking senior companions in the Minot area. Companions provide help and friendship to older adults in the community. Call (800) 450-1510.

CITIZEN REPRESENTATIVES NEEDED: The North Dakota Department of Human Services is recruiting volunteer citizen representatives to serve as long-term care community ombudsmen. Call Bryan Fredrickson at (888) 342-4900 for more information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Women's Way needs volunteers to help inform area women about free screening services. Call (800) 449-6636.

MAKE-A-WISH: The nonprofit organization Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota is seeking volunteers in the Minot area. The foundation grants wishes to North Dakota children with life-threatening medical conditions. Currently, the foundation has opportunities for volunteering that include area volunteer chair, wish granting, the speaker bureau, airport greeters and special event organizers. DONATIONS WANTED

WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. Those who would like to donate may bring monetary donations, coffee, including decaffeinated, Styrofoam or paper plates, plastic silverware, coffee filters, Styrofoam cups (9 oz. size), napkins, toilet paper, tin foil, large plastic bags, Kleenex, paper towels, cookies, bars, pop, powdered drink mixes, snack foods, healthy snacks, frozen pizzas, canned vegetables, cassette tapes, videos, CDs and DVDs, grooming and cosmetic supplies, Scotch tape dispenser refills, envelopes, birthday gift bags, adult softball gloves, large garbage bags, large size baskets or unique containers for fundraisers, batteries, AAA, AA and C and gift items that can be used for Bingo prizes and Christmas gifts. Donations of used clothes are not needed. The club is located at 13-1st Ave. SW. The best time to drop off donations is weekdays between 2 and 9:30 p.m. 2nd Story is a social club for adults with developmental disabilities. It is accessible for those with handicaps.
