POSITIVE STATE A recent Gallup poll showed that North Dakota residents were the most positive in the nation about their public school system, with 87 percent of responders rating the system as excellent or good. The poll also showed that 82 percent of residents believe the public school system prepares students for the workplace. That's certainly good news, although as Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler pointed out, North Dakota has plenty of work to do to keep improving the system. Students' ACT scores have remained flat in recent years, and too many high school graduates require remedial instruction when they go on to college. Those are only two of the issues Baesler and others in the education world are tasked with improving. But the poll shows that residents still place a high value on education in this state, and that's encouraging to teachers and students across the state.
