The deadline is Nov. 1 for local students to enter two scholarship contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary.
Entries are also being taken for an art contest.
Patriot's Pen Contest
The Patriot's Pen Contest is for students in grades 6-8 and serves as a primer for the Voice of Democracy Contest. Students submit a typed essay of 300-400 words. The 2013-14 theme is "What Patriotism Means To Me." Students begin by competing at the Post level. Post winners advance to district. District winners compete in the state competition. The state winners compete for $46,000 in awards, and the first-place winner wins $5,000.
Voice of Democracy Contest
The Voice of Democracy Contest is open to students in grades 9-12 who are in a public, private or parochial high school or home schooled. The contest requires students to record a 3- to 5-minute speech on a cassette tape or CD and neatly typed. This year's (2013-14) theme is "Why I'm Optimistic About Our Nation's Future." Entries are judged by the local VFW Post before advancing the first-place winner to the district and state levels. All state winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. A total of $152,000 is awarded to national finalists. First place is a $30,000 college scholarship, second place $16,000, third place $10,000, fourth place through 32nd-place awards range from $7,000 to $1,500, with all remaining winners receiving $1,000. There are also local, district and state prizes.

Young American Creative Patriotic Art contest
The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. The top national prize is a $10,000 scholarship. The national first-place winnings include airfare to the national convention in St. Louis, and their entry featured on the cover of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Magazine. The eight top prize winners will be featured on the Ladies Auxiliary website (ladiesauxvfw.org). The art contest deadline is March 31, 2014. For more information contact Guy at 839-3344.
