DEVILS LAKE - The Pierre, S.D., fishing tandem of Travor Diegel and Paul Steffen hooked their way to a first place finish in the recent Cabela's Masters Walleye Circuit event held at Devils Lake. The tournament, in which only artificial bait was allowed, was held Aug. 2-3 out of Graham's Island State Park.
The Pierre fishermen led after Day 1 with a five-fish limit weighing 24 pounds, 13 ounces. They protected their lead with a 20-pound, 13-ounce effort on Day 2.
"Winning this artificial baits only event is really special," said Steffen. "It ranks right at the top in my book."
Winning by an 11-pound margin is almost unheard of on the MWC circuit. The win was earned the team the $11,100 first place prize money and a $1,000 Cabela's National Team championship prize package, a $1,000 Cabela's gift card, $1,000 Ranger Cup contingency money, $500 Berkley Tackle package, $500 from Lowrance Electronics and $714 from the Big Fish pot. All totaled, the winning team was awarded $15,814 in cash and prizes.
Seventy-seven two-man teams participated in the tournament. The next event on the MWC circuit is scheduled for Aug. 22-23 on the St. Mary's River at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
