BISMARCK - The Minot State University softball team outscored Northern Sun foe Southwest Minnesota State 21-3 in a doubleheader sweep at University of Mary on Saturday.
The Beavers (23-2 overall, 5-1 NSIC) defeated the Mustangs 12-2 in six innings in the opening game before posting a 9-1 victory in five innings in the latter game.
MSU senior pitchers Mandy Greenberg and Tiffany Friesen kept SMS' offense in check with solid outings. Greenberg earned her team-leading 12th win of the season, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out 12 in six innings. Friesen improved to 9-1 with an eight-strikeout performance in five innings of work.
"We needed to respond and put last night behind us," MSU coach Bill Triplett said in a press release. "I thought we did that pretty well."
MSU junior Katie Backes delivered a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap off a six-run frame to end game one.
Junior Jen Dixon went 3-for-3 in game two with a home run and two RBIs. Sophomore Melissa Bell was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
The Beavers play their first home games of the season - weather permitting - against Bemidji State on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
