NEW SCHOOL Officials in Minnewaukan held a grand opening this past week for the town's new public school that was built a safe distance from the rising waters of Devils Lake. The new one-story school has three wings, with updated technology. The growing lake was approaching the school, its parking lot and athletic field. The new school is more than a mile away from the old building, and sits at an elevation safe from flooding. It was funded through a variety of sources, including an Impact Aid Grant, State Aid Grants, New Market Tax Credits, and other sources. The waters of Devils Lake have been overtaking land in the Minnewaukan area for years, forcing some residents to move homes and other structures. The school eventually was in danger, too, and building a new school was the right choice for the town to make. Students and teachers can now focus on education rather than the level of Devils Lake. And that can only be a good thing.
