Raymond Martin, 86, of Big Lake, Minn., passed away Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Cherrywood of Big Lake.
Raymond was born March 3, 1926, in Sheridan County, N.D., to Gustav and Caroline (Martin) Martin. He grew up in North Dakota and moved to St. Paul, Minn., at an early age, where he attended Marshall High School. He entered the Navy at the age of 17, serving in the South Pacific Theater and in the Okinawa Battle. He returned to St. Paul following the war and attended business college and became a CPA. He was united in marriage to Elaine Vollmer on Nov. 26, 1947. The couple made their home in St. Paul for many years, moving to Edina, Bloomington, and finally to Big Lake in 1983.
Raymond worked for Minneapolis AAA as a controller for many years. In 1979-80, he and Elaine lived in Hawaii and did missionary work there. He returned to Minnesota and worked at Goodwill until his retirement in 1989. During their lifetime, he and Elaine helped parent seven foster children. In their retirement, they did volunteer work in Texas, Missouri, Florida, California and Nevada.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Timothy (Linda) Martin, of Panama City Beach, Fla., Janice (Wayne) Dammeier, of Big Lake, Sarah Bowers, of Colleyville, Texas; grandchildren, Jeffrey Martin, Gregory Martin, Nathan Bowers, Justin Dammeier, Joel Dammeier and Jillian Dammeier; great-grandchildren, Evan Martin, Conner Martin and Emilie Bowers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Caroline; daughter, Carol Allen; and 10 siblings, Rose, Emil, Robert, Ada, Ruth, Johny, Paul, Conrad, Velma and Harold.
Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m., in Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello, Minn.
Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 8, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Friday, one hour prior to the funeral, at the chapel.
Interment will be at Big Lake Cemetery.
