Orvis Dahl, age 86, of Westhope, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at a Minot hospital. His funeral will be held on Monday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Westhope. Visitation will be today, Oct. 7. from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Nero Funeral Home in Westhope. Burial will be at the Westhope Cemetery.
Orvis Clayton Royce Dahl, a son of John and Selma (Nelson) Dahl, was born on Jan. 23, 1926, at Landa. He was reared there and graduated from Landa High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Navy in February of 1945. He was sent to radioman school in Hawaii. Following graduation, he was stationed at Wake Island and served as a radioman. He received his honorable discharge in May of 1946, and returned to the farm near Landa.
On Oct. 9, 1949, he married Geraldine "Merle" Foss. They moved to California in 1952, where he worked for Douglas Aircraft. He worked there until 1974, when they returned to the farm. He farmed for a few years and then operated the water treatment plant in Westhope. He retired in 1988.
Orvis was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Westhope. He was also a member of the Westhope VFW and the Westhope Senior Citizen Center. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Mouse River Homes.
He is survived by: his wife, Merle, of Westhope; sons, Lon (Debbie) Dahl, of Henderson, Colo., Ronald (Liz) Dahl, of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughters, Janis (Jim) Houmann, of Westhope, and Diane (Denny) McKechnie, of Westhope; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Dahl, of Royal Oaks, Calif.; sister, Ardell Cossette, of Atascadero, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
