SportsDay ND 12/22
December 22, 2012 - Staff Blog
Well, folks, I've about checked out. I'm a story and a punch of the time card away from a six-day Christmas break in the Pacific Northwest.
If the roads are OK -- which I highly doubt -- I might roll into God's country just in time to watch my Seahawks do work on the 49ers on Sunday night.
Anyway, on to the links...
Our best: Nothing on the Minot State and Class A front, but fellow scribe Mike Kraft and I made the two-hour jaunt to Cando to cover a pair of marquee Class B boys basketball games. Here's Kraft's story on No. 2 Beulah taking down top-ranked North Star, despite 31 points from Jacob Hagler...Here's my story from No. 9 Rugby's edging of third-ranked Cavalier. The Panthers didn't need Kyle Lovcik's typical output to down the Tornadoes, either.
Around the West Region: Steve Thomas of the Bismarck Tribune staffed Bismarck's boys and girls basketball sweep of St. Mary's in a West Region doubleheader...Royal McGregor of the Dickinson Press covered a DHS boys hoops victory over Devils Lake; Dustin Monke of the Press has this story about Dickinson Trinity's loss to top-ranked Bishop Ryan in girls hoops.
Around the East Region: Tom Miller of the Grand Forks Herald was front and center for No. 4 Grand Forks Red River's win over second-ranked Fargo Davies in boys hoops; Miller also has a story for Red River's win over Davies on the girls side. The Jamestown Sun, Wahpeton Daily News and Valley City Record all staffed things, too -- but they refuse to post their content after deadline and I'm not about to get up at 7 a.m. to see if it's up yet.
NDSU: The North Dakota State men's basketball team downed Morehead State to pick up its 10th win of the season. Here's the Forum's Jeff Kolpack's story. Summit League games now await the Bison.
UND: The Fightin' Whatchamacallits dropped to 0-2 in Big Sky Conference play on Friday night after falling to Northern Colorado in a men's basketball game. The Grand Forks Herald's Wayne Nelson has the story...UND women's basketball coach Travis Brewster has been suspended a game for comments following a BSC loss at Southern Utah last week. And, yes, those comments were about the officiating.
Of interest: Our Sports Editor, Daniel Allar, found a pretty nice link regarding Minot Minotauros coach Marty Murray. Murray, a former NHL player and junior-hockey sensation, is ranked No. 17 on the Toronto Sports Network's Top 40 Canadian junior-hockey players ever. Sid Crosby is behind Murray at No. 23 while The Great One checks in at No. 3.
