Most annoying Christmas songs of all time

December 6, 2012 - Andrea Johnson
One year I asked a clerk in one of the local stores how she could stand listening to Christmas music all day long. She rolled her eyes and said, "Just shoot me already." I swear the Christmas music started before Thanksgiving this year. After more than a month of nonstop caroling, who could blame her?

I think we all have our private list of Christmas carols that set our teeth on edge. I did an informal poll of the newsroom and some of the songs that most annoy my co-workers include: "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," "Santa Baby," "Feliz Navidad," ""Happy Xmas (War is Over)" and Band Aid's "Do They Know it's Christmas?"

The general consensus is that these songs are either just plain annoying, maddening, or so catchy you can't get them out of your head. My personal list of most hated Christmas tunes includes "Christmas Shoes," the one about the kid who's buying a pair of shoes for his dying mommy at Christmas. Of course I'd be sorry for any real kid in that situation but the song is emotionally manipulative and too treacly for words.

I like my Christmas tunes solemn and traditional, without too much jingling of bells or jazz. My top five favorites include "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," "The Little Drummer Boy," "Silver Bells" and "Mary Did You Know?"

Most of all I wish the Christmas tunes were not so overplayed that everyone is sick of them by the time December 25 rolls around.

What are your most loved and hated Christmas songs?
