Prince George or Princess Alice of Cambridge?
July 16, 2013 - Andrea Johnson
As somewhat of an Anglophile, I am curious about the impending birth of the royal baby and the name his or her parents will choose.
Apparently the United Kingdom has changed its laws so the baby will eventually be the monarch, regardless of whether it's a boy or a girl. Under the old rules, boys came before girls in the line of succession and a princess could eventually have been displaced by a younger brother.
Of course, that's assuming that there will actually be a monarchy in another 50 years, whenever it's time for the child to rule. There's quite an outspoken faction among our British cousins who would like to do away with kings and queens.
As for the name, I think it's a good bet there will be at least four of them. Father Prince William's full name is William Arthur Philip Louis and most of the royal cousins seem to have four names apiece. It will probably be a family name too, since the royals are quite fond of tradition.
My personal guess for a boy is George Philip Charles Michael (George is a name from both sides of the royal family; Philip is William's ailing grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Charles and Michael are the names of the paternal and maternal grandfathers.) I rather think the child is a boy, but if it happens to be a girl, I will guess she will be called Alice Elizabeth Diana Carole (Alice for Prince Philip's mother, William's great-grandmother; Elizabeth for the Queen; Diana and Carole for the baby's paternal and maternal grandmothers.)
I could be right or I could be wrong, but one sure bet is that the baby will not be called Wayne or Chardonnay, both names that seem to be trending among people betting on the baby's name.
What do you think the new prince or princess will be called?
