Start living like free men

Steven Moen, Minot

Monday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day; all the freedoms we enjoy in this country are due in large part to the veterans. More than 1.6 million of them have paid the ultimate price to gain and to keep these freedoms.

The Revolutionary War vets bled and died for religious and economic freedoms. I wonder how they’d feel if they knew Christ and His church are under direct attack by the government and the taxes they rebelled over are miniscule compared to ones we pay today?

The Civil War vets sacrificed themselves to protect the Union and free the slaves; I wonder what they would think of all the people who willingly sell themselves into servitude to the government for government handouts?

The World War II vets fought and died to free the world from tyrannical rulers who killed 11 million to 26 million victims (depending on who’s included) in the Holocaust. I wonder if the 56.7 million innocent unborn dead sacrificed on the altar of convenience in this country would bother them at all.

The veterans have done their job to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic over the years but we the people have been sorely lacking in our zeal and energy to do the same. British statesman Edmund Burke said all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. For too long we have done nothing and have by our apathy allowed our freedoms to be taken away from us one freedom at a time. If the veterans who have died in all the wars prior to 1970 wouldn’t even recognize this country if they could come back and walk the streets they grew up on.

Samuel Adams said it best. “If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom-go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands, which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!”

Let us honor our vets by not continuing to lick the government’s hands but stand up and throw off their shackles and start to live like free men.
