Volunteers make Minot a stronger community

Community newspapers are always in the unique position of being able to deliver both good news and bad, big news or trivial.

Today’s edition, we are happy to say, has several examples of local people doing good deeds for others in the area, asking nothing in return, which makes us a stronger community.

The most noticeable example, of course, was the front page story on the Minot police and fire departments getting together for a charity hockey game. What fun. And they are even talking about making it an annual event.

Good job everybody involved. We hope Minot residents will come out in strong numbers, for the sake of the Schneider family and to show support for our firefighters and police, who are making such a generous donation of their time.

Also in the news today are members of the Minot Minotauros hockey team who volunteered to help unload the Great Plains Food Truck at the Salvation Army in Minot on Tuesday. The team was looking for a way to give back and made a perfect connection with two other organizations that know what volunteering is about.

Well done Minotauros.

Not to be outdone were members of Girl Scout Troop 10132 who donated 200 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the Trinity CancerCare Center on Tuesday.

It’s become a tradition for the troop, and a good one at that. Patients at Trinity CancerCare will be well stocked with cookies for some time, thanks to the Girl Scouts.

We can’t claim that Minot is the best or better than other city in the state when it comes to volunteering. But we can’t help but notice that people in Minot, young and old, have a knack for finding ways to help out a good cause or simply make a fellow human feel special. We should pause and be proud of ourselves as a city for just a moment.

If you have volunteered in similar fashion recently, take a bow. You deserve it.
