Minot Public Schools bulging with students

Minot’s growing student population is, well, growing some more.

That’s good news, a sign of a healthy city. It’s also tough news for school administrators tasked with educating Minot’s youth – and potentially tougher news for taxpayers who are still feeling the growing pains of the oil boom that came and went.

The first two graphs of Saturday’s story on the issue:

“The most recent enrollment projections for the Minot Public School District show slowing, but continuing growth in enrollment in the school district over the next five years.

“That means that the district will eventually have to consider the problem of what to do about middle schools and high school campuses that are at or over capacity.”

Gee, that sounds familiar. Yes, Minot has been in this fix before. But, fortunately, the current school board and administration are well aware of the situation and making plans to deal with it.

The fix will ultimately cost more money; we assume that. But one of the biggest questions Minot residents might have to come to terms with is whether the school district should have two 9-12 grade high schools. That, too, has been on the public’s plate before.

Some might say Minot residents have ducked that potential solution for many years. Certainly it will be debated again, and it should be. In fact, we feel the more discussion that occurs on the issue of school infrastructure the better. Only good can come of addressing such problems early – and sincerely.

Let’s start talking about it.
