Lee Wieland
Dec. 7, 1948-Oct. 16, 2021
Lee Wieland, 72, Minot
died Saturday, October
16, 2021, in a Minot hos-
pital with Carmel, Jarah,
and Jacob by his side.
Lee Francis Wieland
was born on December 7,
1948 to Richard and Mary
(Hagensen) Wieland in
Valley City, ND. He gra-
duated high school from
Cardinal Muench Sem-
inary, Fargo, ND in 1966.
He attended North Dakota
State University, graduat-
ing with a Bachelor of Sci-
ence degree in Mathemat-
ics in 1971. Following his
college education, he
taught school at Plaza and
Surrey high schools.
On June 11, 1977, Lee
married the love of his
life, Carmel Braaflat in
Plaza, ND. They made
their home in Minot. Lee
began working for the Un-
ited State Postal Service
in 1979. He worked in
various capacities at the
Post Office, retiring in
2013.
Lee was an avid MN
Twins and Vikings fan,
but like many Twins and
Vikings fans, the frustra-
tion was deeply felt. Two
Vikings games were spe-
cial – a game at Lincoln
Financial Stadium in Phi-
ladelphia with Jacob and
one at US Bank Stadium
in Minneapolis with
Jarah.
Lee loved to hunt and
fish and would take any-
one with who wanted to
go. The best memories in-
volved hunting and fish-
ing with his kids, as well
as nieces, nephews, and
family friends. Lee was
especially grateful for the
Max farmers and his
nephews in Plaza, who al-
lowed him to hunt on
their land anytime he
wanted. In the early years
of their marriage, Lee kept
a diary of sorts where he
tracked the number of
birds he got verses how
many Carmel got. The
written record stopped
when Carmel switched
from a single shot shot-
gun, to a semi-automatic.
Lee’s faith was very im-
portant to him. Faith
helped him accept his
cancer diagnosis with
grace, as well as give him
the strength to fight it for
six years. He volunteered
at Our Lady of Grace serv-
ing and reading at Mass.
He was blessed enough to
go on three mission trips
to Africa, to spread the
Word around the world.
After retiring, Lee lived
for his grandchildren.
Whether it was reading to
them, pulling them on the
sled, or watching all their
activities, he loved all of it
and was very present in
their lives.
He was affectionately
known as “Uncle Lee” by
more than just his nieces
and nephews. He was a
loving husband, dad,
grandpa, brother, and
friend and will be missed
by all who knew him.
