JoAnn Patterson

JoAnn E. Patterson, 81,

Norwich, ND, passed

away on Thursday, Au-

gust 12, 2021, at a Min-

neapolis, MN hospital.

JoAnn was born on

February 13, 1940 to

Joseph and Rose (Affeldt)

Smith in Minot. She grew

up on the family farm

south of Sawyer, ND and

graduated from Sawyer

High School in 1958. Fol-

lowing graduation, JoAnn

was employed by many

area farmers and ranchers

as a cook and babysitter.

JoAnn met Hugh Patter-

son while working for an

area rancher. They were

married on April 26, 1959

and made their home

south of Denbigh, ND,

where they farmed,

ranched, and raised their

sons until 1980 when they

moved to Norwich. There

Hugh started H.J. Patter-

son Trucking with JoAnn

helping with dispatch and

bookwork in between

watching grandchildren.

JoAnn and Hugh loved

spending time at the lake.

Hugh passed away in

2013.

JoAnn’s hobbies includ-

ed ceramics, crocheting,

knitting, needlework, and

Artex painting. She was

formerly an active

member of Norway Luth-

eran Church in Denbigh

and a current member of

Zion Lutheran Church in

Towner.

JoAnn is survived by:

her sons, Dwayne

(JoAnn), Arlen (Beth), and

Mark (Sandy) Patterson,

all of Norwich; sisters,

Ruth Jefferson, Granada

Hills, CA, and Audrey

Coombes, Bloomington,

MN; grandchildren, Dus-

tin (Jackie), Kyle (Kelsey),

Carrie, Arlen, Travis, and

Sadie; four

great-grandchildren; and

numerous nieces,

nephews, cousins, and

other extended family.

She was preceded in

death by: her husband,

Hugh; parents, Joseph and

Rose Smith; brothers,

Wayne, Marlow, and Gary

Smith; and sister, Gloria

Heizelman.

A memorial service

will be held on Saturday,

September 25, 2021 at 1

p.m. at Zion Lutheran

Church in Towner. Burial

will follow at the Sawyer

Cemetery in Sawyer, ND
