Esther June Steinwand
was born June 8, 1928 in
rural Turtle Lake to An-
drew and Julia (Walter)
Sackman. She was raised
and educated in the rural
Turtle Lake area and later
completed high school
studies by correspon-
dence, earning her GED.
She married Wilbert
Steinwand in Turtle Lake
on October 10, 1946, mov-
ing to Wilbert’s farm out-
side of Garrison where
side by side they worked
to build up their farm and
together raised two chil-
dren, Diana and Terry.
Esther remained on the
farm following Wilbert’s
death in 2007. Then, be-
cause of health reasons,
she moved to Edgewood
assisted living in Mandan
in 2017 and then to the
Baptist Health Care
Center in Bismarck in
2019.
Esther was a life
member of St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church in
Garrison, served as secre-
tary of Snow Township
for 28 years, and for
several years, worked at
Frederick’s Variety and
Chase Pharmacy in
Garrison.
Esther loved the farm
life and worked hard
helping Wilbert in the
fields, milking cows, and
raising chickens and
geese. But her passion
was her gardening. She al-
ways planted a huge gar-
den, loved watching her
plants sprout and grow
and then sharing all of her
produce with her family.
But above all else, she
cherished her family. She
adored each family
member and always made
each one feel special,
from the oldest child to
the youngest great
grandchild. She always
enjoyed family coming to
the farm to visit, especial
ly the grandchildren com-
ing to spend a few days.
Each one will remember
her signature chicken and
dumplings, which was al-
ways on the menu when
they came to stay.
