Darrel John Rytter

Darrel John Rytter died

in his home in Kenmare,

ND, on June 24th, 2019, at

the age of 74.

Darrel John Rytter was

born December 15, 1944,

to Helen (Hanson) and

Viggo Rytter in Kenmare,

ND. He graduated from

Kenmare High School in

1962 and from the Univer-

sity of North Dakota with

a Master of Science De-

gree in Biochemistry in

1968. His work included

medical biochemical

research in Indianapolis,

Midland, Michigan, and

Cincinnati.

Darrel retired early and

returned to Kenmare

about 1995. He had a

lifetime hobby of bird

watching, and also or-

ganized the Burke County

birding tour. Darrel en-

joyed hunting and fishing

as a lifelong hobbies, was

inducted into the

Goosefest Hall of Fame in

2001. Upon returning to

the prairies he focused on

using a brain tanning pro-

cess developed by the

American Indians to tan

big game hides. His work

included a bison teepee

made with hides from the

New Rockford Bison Co-

Op., which has been part

of many historic events

and the N.D. State Fair.

Some of his tanned hides

are in museums today.

Darrel has participated in

Buckskin Rendezvous as

well as black powder and

muzzle loading events.

He also found time to

construct a field rock

building (house) as a gath-

ering place at the

farm. Darrel relished the

opportunity to roast a

fresh hog for special occa-

sions and enjoyed going

to auction sales and bring-

ing home good stuff. He

acquired a kiln and

delved into pottery from

local clay, creating medal-

lions he shared at events.

More recently, he has ex-

plored growing heritage

grains and corn, then try-

ing historic recipes to

make bread.

Darrel is survived by

two brothers, Russell and

wife Cindy, Kenmare, ND,

and Loren, Snohomish,

WA; and two sisters, Lyla

Kraft, Kenmare, ND, and

Mavis Meyer, Minot, ND.

Friends and family are

welcome to Darrel’s Cele-

bration of Life at the

Rytter farm in rural Ken-

mare, planned for Noon

on July 13, 2019, with a

reception to follow.
