David Peterson

David Peterson, 83,

Columbus, ND, passed

away Monday, June 3,

2019, at his home sur-

rounded by those who

love him.

David William Peterson

was born December 17,

1935, the son of Edward

and Mabel (Kleppen)

Peterson, in Kenmare,

ND. He was raised and

educated in Columbus

and graduated from

Columbus High School in

1954.

David attended college

in Moorhead, MN. David

then enlisted in the Unit-

ed States Army on Febru-

ary 19, 1958. He proudly

served his country until

being honorably

discharged on February

18, 1960. He remained an

Army Reserve until 1964.

David helped to build

the gas plant in Lignite,

ND, then went to work for

Mountain Iron, selling oil

field supplies. He later

worked for operating the

vacuum truck and per-

forming maintenance on

tanks. He also worked for

the Columbus School Dis-

trict in numerous roles.

David worked for

Marshall-Winston in the

oil field until his retire-

ment in 2000. Throughout

all of these careers,

David’s first love was at

the farm, where he raised

cattle and small grain

crops.

David married Caryn

Gustafson on July 9, 1961.

They made their home in

Columbus, ND.

David was the Mayor of

Columbus for 18 years

and served on the

Columbus City Council

for 20 years; a total of 38

years of service to the City

of Columbus. David was a

true servant of the com-

munity and often per-

formed tasks that in

today’s world fall under

other duties as assigned.

David was also a member

of the Lions Club, served

on the Columbus Fire

Department and served

Trinity Lutheran Church

in various capacities.

David enjoyed farming.

His true hobby was being

a bus driver, taking kids

to their events and watch-

ing them. He also enjoyed

spending time at the cabin

and watching the Vikings

with his hands behind his

head and his eyes closed.

Mongeon and Cortnie

Mongeon; brothers, Floyd

(Donna) Peterson, Willis-

ton and James (Sandra)

Peterson, Rifle, CO;

sister-in-law, Sherryle

Peterson, Eagan, MN; and

numerous nieces and

nephews.

David was preceded in

death by: his parents;

brother, Edward “Eddie”

Peterson; nephew’s, Brian

Peterson and Byron Peter-

son; and father and

mother-in-law, Raymond

and Jewel Gustafson.

Funeral: Friday, June 7,

2019, at 10:30 a.m. at

Trinity Lutheran Church,

Columbus, ND.

Interment: Trinity Luth-

eran Cemetery,

Columbus, ND.

Visitation: One hour

prior to the service at the

church.
