Walter Mertz

Walter Mertz, passed
peacefully, March 7, 2019
at the age of 93.
Walter, son of Godfried
& Maria (Bowman) Mertz,
was born November 12,
1925 on the family farm
in Denhoff, ND. A
member of the US Army
1944-1946, he served in
WWII as a combat infan-
tryman stationed in the
Philippines and in the
Army of Occupation of
Japan. He was injured in
the line of duty, was
honorably discharged and
was the recipient of the
Purple Heart along with
many other medals.
Walter met Eunice
(Cogdill) and they were
married in 1957. He
worked at SRT for 28
years as a Service Techni-
cian and retired from
there in 1989. Walt was
an avid Amateur Radio
Operator. He loved being
on the radio with his
friends and enjoyed
camping, fishing and
spending time with his
family.
He is survived by: his
loving wife of 61 years,
Eunice; six children, Mar-
vin Mertz (Cindy) Minot,
Randall Mertz, Minot,
Rodney Mertz (Tatsiana)
Hugo, MN, Michael Mertz
(Janet Herman) Karlsruhe,
Sandra Gairdelli (Ken-
neth) Covington, LA, and
Della Patterson, Peoria, IL;
five grandchildren: Man-
dy (Mertz) Burckhard,
Cole Mertz (Amber), Tif-
fany Smith (Ben), Antho-
ny (Courtney) Giardelli
and Alex Osipovich; six
great-grandchildren, Tate
Burckhard, Gabriel, Lucas
& Bethany Mertz, Camille
Giardelli and Kiya Osipo-
vich; and many nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Memorial Service:
Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at
3:30 p.m. Christ Lutheran
Church, Minot, ND.
It was Walt’s wish to be
buried at the ND Veterans
Cemetery in Mandan, ND.
A ceremony will be held
there on June 12, 2019.
