Robert L. Volk, 86, Har-
vey, ND died Monday, De-
cember 24, 2018 at the St.
Aloisius Hospital in Har-
vey after a short battle
with cancer surrounded
by his family.
Funeral Mass will be at
10:30 a.m. Saturday, De-
cember 29, 2018 at St.
Cecilia Catholic Church,
Harvey, ND.
Visitation will be from
4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a
rosary prayer service at 7
p.m. on Friday at the
Hertz Funeral Home, Har-
vey, ND.
Committal services will
be held Monday, De-
cember 31, 2018 at 12
noon at the North Dakota
Veterans Cemetery in
Mandan, ND.
Robert Louis Volk was
born on March 1, 1932 on
his grandfather’s farm-
stead north of Harvey, ND
to Steve and Agnes (Con-
rad) Volk. He grew up and
attended rural school
north of Harvey. He gra-
duated from the Harvey
High School in 1950. He
worked on the construc-
tion of the Garrison Dam
from 1950 to 1952. He en-
listed in the US Navy in
1952 and served during
the Korean War. Bob
served aboard the USS
Salisbury Sound (AV-13)
as an Aviation Technician
3. He served in a patrol
force off Formosa and
earned the China Service
Medal. Bob was honor-
ably discharged in 1956
and returned to Harvey.
Bob married Gloriann Ar-
nold on July 12, 1955 at
St. Boniface Catholic
Church in Esmond. Six
children were born to this
union and they made
their home in Harvey. He
began his career with
Northwestern Bell Com-
pany which later became
AT&T. He retired in 1986.
Bob also farmed having
purchased the family farm
north of Harvey in 1971.
He was a Harvey Rural
Letter Carrier sub and was
a census worker. He also
enjoyed his family time
and trips to the farm dur-
ing retirement.
Bob was a member of
the St. Cecilia Catholic
Church and served on the
St. Cecilia Catholic
School Board. He was a
past Grand Knight and a
member of the Knights Of
Columbus Council # 5217
in Harvey for over 50
years. Bob served two
terms on the Harvey City
Council and was a
member of the Telephone
Pioneers of America and
the Wells Eagles Aerie #
3080 in Harvey. Bob was
passionate about his great
love for his country and
his patriotism. He was a
former commander and
current Quartermaster/
Adjutant of the VFW in
Harvey and also served as
the State VFW Com-
mander in 2000-2001. He
was also a member of the
VFW’s Military Order Of
the Cootie. Bob was ap-
pointed by Governor John
Hoeven to serve on the
Administrative Commit-
tee of Veterans Affairs.
Bob was a charter member
of the US Navy League,
the AmVets in Bismarck
and American Legion in
Harvey. He was also a
member of the Harvey
Color Guard.
Bob is survived by his
wife of 63 years, Gloriann
of Harvey, ND; six chil-
dren, Steve, Tim (Linda),
Robert Jr., Cindy (Dave)
Magnus, Douglas
(DeAnn), Tom (Heather)
of Hazen all of North
Dakota; 11 grandchildren;
7 great-grandchildren;
brother, Don Volk of
Atlantic, Iowa; sister-in-
law, Deb Volk of Minot;
nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in
death by his parents Steve
and Agnes; brother, Gary;
sister, Geraldine Dahly
and brother-in-law Will
Dahly; sister-in-law Ar-
lene Volk; great-grand-
child Bennett Paul Reule.
