Janet Washek, 75, rural
Sawyer, ND, died Friday,
October 12, 2018 at her
home surrounded by her
loving family.
Janet was born May 6,
1943 in Vancouver, Wash-
ington the daughter of Leo
and Hazel (Morey) Flam-
mang. She moved to
North Dakota with her
family at an early age. She
was raised and educated
in Minot, where she at-
tended grade school at St.
Leo’s, graduated from
Bishop Ryan High School
and furthered her educa-
tion at Minot State Col-
lege with a major in edu-
cation and a minor in
music. She was active
with Sigma, Sigma, Sigma
Sorority there. She re-
ceived her Masters in
Education from Mayville
State University.
Janet was united in
marriage to Joslyn “Mike”
Washek on June 8, 1963 at
Little Flower Catholic
Church in Minot. She was
dedicated to teaching stu-
dents for over 39 years
with Minot Public
Schools. She came out of
retirement to continue her
involvement in education
for 10 additional years at
Bishop Ryan Catholic
School. She received the
Presidential Award for Ex-
cellence in Science and
Mathematics Teaching in
1992. Her biggest legacy
was to the many students
whose lives she touched
because of her dedication
and passion for learning
and her belief in educa-
tion.
Janet was a board
member for the Minot
Area School Credit Union,
the North Dakota Council
of Teachers of Mathemat-
ics and assisted with writ-
ing the ND Standards for
Mathematics. She was a
member of the Shiny Ass
Bridge Club for 25 years,
enjoyed playing Canasta,
and painted in oils with
her good friend Bev. In
addition, she attempted to
golf all of the courses in
North Dakota with her
two close friends, Glee
and Bonnie. They played
82 of the 106 courses.
Janet was a member of St.
Cecilia’s Catholic Church
and Catholic Daughters.
Her loving family in-

years, Mike Washek, of
Sawyer; children, Mary
