Garfield Olson

Garfield Olson—100,
Velva, formerly of Butte,
ND, died on Monday, Au-
gust 14, 2017 in a Velva
nursing home.
Garfield was born on
March 6, 1917, the son of
Martin and Christina
(Goodmanson) Olson in
Chetek, Wisconsin. At the
age of three he moved
with his family to a farm
north of Butte, ND. He
was raised and educated
in Butte, where he gra-
duated from High School
in 1935. Following his
graduation, he continued
to farm.
In 1948, Garfield was
united in marriage to Eun-
ice Haugen in Towner,
ND; In 1951, the family
farm was sold, and Gar-
field worked in the copper
mines in Montana, then in
Minot for Stroh’s delivery.
In 1953, he resumed farm-
ing, and was able to pur-
chase the original farm
back in 1969. He farmed
alongside his sons Jim,
Bob and Richard. In 1981,
he retired from farming.
During his retirement
years, Garfield built a
home in the Turtle Moun-
tains near Bottineau, ND,
where he lived until re-
turning to Velva.
He enjoyed restoring
old John Deere tractors,
gardening and hunting.
Garfield is survived by:
Two sons: James Olson,
Butte, Robert Olson,
Butte; a special friend
Janet Olson of the Turtle
Mountains.
Garfield was preceded
in death by his parents,
son Richard, sisters Alice,
Edna, Orpha and Berna-
dine amnd brothers Os-
car, Bill and Marshall.
A graveside service:
will take place on
Wednesday, August 16,
2017 at 10 am at the Velva
Community Cemetery,
Velva, ND
