Carl D. Godsell—66,
Minot, passed away on
Friday, July 21, 2017 in a
Minot hospital.
Carl DeWayne Godsell
was born on August 9,
1950, the son of Carl B.
and Doris (Smart) Godsell
in Worland, WY. He was
moved with his family to
California when he was a
toddler, and grew up
Riverbank,and as a
teenager in Tracy, CA,
where he graduated from
Tracy High School.
On August 29, 1968,
Dewayne enlisted into the
United States Army. He
served his country in the
Vietnam Crisis, also being
stationed at Fort Huachu-
ca, AZ. While he was on
leave from the Army, just
prior to going to Vietnam,
Carl was united in mar-
riage to Susan L. Nicklett.
He was deployed to Viet-
nam in 1969. DeWayne
was honorably discharged
August 14, 1970.
Following his discharge
he moved to Columbia,
CA, where he furthered
his education at Columbia
Junior College. Later, he
was employed by the
Army Corps of Engineers.
He worked as a Construc-tion Representative in
flood management and
military construction, be-
ing stationed in Califor-
nia, Arizona, Germany
and North Dakota. In
1985, he and his family
settled in Minot, ND; He
retired in 1995, and cared
for his family and pam-
pered his wife.
DeWayne was an avid
history buff, and enjoyed
watching documentaries,
and reading about World
War II, Vietnam, and oth-
er topics of interest. He
was active for many years
at the Minot Gun Club
and Minot Rifle and Pistol
Club, participating in
competitive trap shooting.
His past times in retire-
ment included cooking for
his family, attending gun
shows, and caring for his
beloved pets. His love of
animals was demonstrat-
ed by the many rescued
pets he cared for and
adopted over the years.
Most were abandoned
near his home and he
would take them in. He
was well known at the
veterinarian clinic for
bringing in abandoned
pets and caring for them
and adopting them.
He is survived by:Wife
of 48 years, Susan Lynn,
Minot, ND; Daughter Eri-
ca (Larry) Baumgartner;
Son: Zachary Thomas
Godsell; One grandson
Dylan, Son of Erica and
Larry Baumgartner, whom
he loved beyond measure.
He is also survived by his
sister LaDonna Casey
(Wayne,).
DeWayne was preceded
in death by: his parents
Chapel and Graveside
Service: Friday, July 28,
2017, at 2 pm at the North
Dakota Veterans Cemetery
Chapel, Mandan, ND.
In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be given
to the North Dakota
Veterans Cemetery or the
Souris Valley Animal
Shelter.
