Janet McCallum

Janet A. McCallum, 70, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at St. Alexius Medical Center, in Bismarck. After battling a serious illness, Janet went to her eternal home.

Janet was born Sept. 19, 1944, in Minot, North Dakota, to Alton C. and Jennie (Rygg) Anderson. She graduated from Minot High School in 1962 and the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, in 1966, with a degree in business administration.

Janet married Robert W. McCallum on June 12, 1965, in First Presbyterian Church in Minot. Robert and Janet owned and operated Anderson Ace Hardware in Bismarck for 30 years, closing their store in 1996. Their store was started in 1938 by Janet’s father. At the time of closing, it was the fifth oldest Ace store in the nation under continuous family ownership.

In retirement, she was seasonally employed by the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation in Medora.

Janet was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bismarck, where she served as both a deacon and an elder.

She was a member of Chapter N and a charter member and past president of Chapter AX of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a member of Current Events Club. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, Bismarck Republican Women, and Sverdrup 107 Lodge of the Sons of Norway.

Janet served on the Bismarck-Mandan Salvation Army Advisory Board for 30 years and was a past advisory board chairman.

She served on the State Executive Board of US West Communications, and on the North Dakota Job Service Advisory Council. She also co-chaired the North Dakota delegation to the 1995 White House Conference on Small Business. She was an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2012.

She is survived by: her husband, Robert; two daughters, Laura McCallum Bryan (James) of Edina, Minn., and Lisa McCallum, of St. Paul, Minn. She is also survived by one grandson, Wyatt McCallum Miller, and two stepgrandchildren, Bella and Max Bryan, all of Edina.

Janet was preceded in death by: her brother, Jerome, in 1962, her father, Alton Anderson, in 1992, and her mother, Jennie Anderson, in 2008.

In lieu of flowers: memorials are preferred to the Bismarck-Mandan Salvation Army or to the First Presbyterian Church of Bismarck.

Services will be held: 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at First Presbyterian Church, 214 E Thayer Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Zuehlke officiating.

Burial will be held: at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held: from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.
