Sex offender charged with indecent exposure

Dawson Wilcox

A Minot man sentenced in February to time served and sex offender registration after pleading guilty to promoting or directing an obscene sexual performance by a minor has been charged with indecent exposure.

Dawson Jon Wilcox, 26, made his initial appearance in North Central District Court on Monday, Nov. 3, after being charged with indecent exposure-masturbate-registered offender, a Class C felony.

According to court documents, Ward County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a southeast Minot address in August for a report of a male yelling at an alleged victim and masturbating from a nearby residence. The victim reported other encounters with Dawson, describing his actions as escalating and becoming more erratic.

Deputies then spoke with the property owner, who confirmed he allowed Wilcox to keep animals on the property and was frequently on it.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Wilcox did not answer the door when visited by deputies, but called the sheriff’s office to explain he was at the property that day but “did not commit any inappropriate acts.” According to the affidavit, Wilcox further said he has had issues with neighbors harassing him due to his history.

Wilcox was sentenced in February to 360 days in the Ward County Jail after entering a plea agreement with the Ward County State’s Attorney and pleading guilty to one Class A felony count of promoting or directing an obscene sexual performance by a minor.

According to court documents, the charge against Wilcox stemmed from an investigation into a cybertip regarding images and videos sent over a messaging app which originated from his address.

Wilcox will enter his plea to the charge at a preliminary hearing currently scheduled for Dec. 11.
