School board approves budget

The Minot Public School Board gave unanimous approval on final reading to a 2022-23 school district budget with a deficit of $4.1 million that will include a sizable tax increase for Minot residents.

The 33 mill levy increase amounts will levy about $32.6 million in taxes.

The increase is due to the school bond issue passed in December 2020 by voters that will pay for construction of a new four-year high school, conversion of Central Campus into a third in-town middle school, and conversion of Magic City Campus into a four-year high school.

Business manager Laura Dokken said the budget also reflects an increase in health insurance expenses for school employees between 6.2% for a high deductible plan to 7.4% for a different insurance plan.

The largest portion of the budget is salary and benefits for employees.

Board members also heard an update on construction on the projects. Work began this fall on projects at Magic City Campus and the site of the new North Minot High School at the former Cognizant in northwest Minot. The projects are scheduled for completion by the fall of 2024.
