Halloween night light show

Tonight, the Zablotneys’ Halloween light show will end at 10 p.m. for the season. Dottie and Chris Zablotney are heading into their fourth holiday season light show. This year is the first year they put together a Halloween display. Dottie Zablotney said the Christmas season light show will begin Thanksgiving night at 7:15 p.m.

The couple have created their light show display and love doing it as a gift to the community. Dottie Zablotney said people have tried to donate money to them and she always tells them to donate to a charity of their choosing instead.

“We were actually inspired by the Olson’s Christmas light show at 1500 52nd Avenue Southwest and Chris is very into technology, so it has become our holiday hobby,” said Dottie Zablotney. Additionally, the couple does a Veterans Day show from Nov. 8-12.

The Halloween show is choreographed to 11 songs that can be heard by turning into 93.1 on the FM dial. The lights dance and change colors on the metal, plastic and wood forms with pixelated node LED lights. The Zablotneys purchased the forms and cut patterns using stencils and installed and soldered the lights together.

Each form or individual prop is connected to a cat 5 cable, said Chris Zablotney. Switching out the props has become an easy transition as the forms are magnetic and stick to the house, so transitioning the props from Halloween to Christmas, they can easily remove the bats and replace with snowflakes.

Chris Zablotney has several monitors and software programs detailing the song programing. He figures it takes him 40-50 hours per song to design the light show. The Christmas light show has 14 songs. A neighbor requested “Little Drummer Boy” so that is on the set list this year for Christmas.

The couple has three grown children and a new grandchild and enjoy the community of Minot. Dottie Zablotney works at the Minot Air Force Base Child Development Center and Chris Zablotney works at Sunrise Delivery.

“The light show is a lot of work but we love it, and the neighbors do not seem to get to bothered by the vibrant lights and constant flow of traffic,” Chris Zablotney said.

He said he has made signs that ask cars to avoid blocking driveways and so far, people seem to be cooperating. The couple enjoy watching others enjoy the lights and have noted local assisted living facilities and party buses among the traffic.

The Zablotneys’ home at 1224 6th St. SW currently has lights across the front yard, but Chris is ready to wrap the designs around the side of the house for next year, and one neighbor has extended an invitation to spread the joy to another house entirely. The couple plans to continue the light display in the coming years.

The Christmas show will be Nov. 24 – Jan. 2. Get more information on their Facebook page, Zablotney’s Holiday Lightshow.
