BOTTINEAU — The Dakota College at Bottineau Alumni Association will recognize Alumni Association and Lumberjack Athletic Hall of Fame recipients at its Awards Recognition Banquet, a semi-private event at the Cobblestone Inn, Bottineau, on Oct. 8. The award recipients and guests have been contacted by special invite.

The social will start at 6 p.m., dinner served at 6:30 p.m. followed by the award ceremony and induction. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at the college alumni office or the DCB bookstore.

Christopher Lee will receive The Young Alumnus award, which goes to a DCB alum who has graduated within the last 15 years, is successful, and shows growth and promise in their chosen career. The recipient must have contributed to society in a beneficial way and is setting a good example in the community. After his active enlistment ended with the Marines, Lee enrolled at Dakota College and is a 2011 liberal arts graduate. He transferred to North Dakota State University to complete his criminal justice degree and is currently working as a park ranger with North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department at the Lake Metigoshe State Park.

The Friend of the College recipient is someone who has been very supportive of Dakota College at Bottineau, donating time, money, and/or resources that have made a significant impact on the college. Dakota College’s campus is glorified by the volunteer assistance of Kathleen Grosz, Tim Davis, Ann Parrill, Donna Porter, Bobbi Aus and Joan Mortensen, who are referred to as DCB’s Garden Volunteers. This group has been friends for a long time and has been volunteering at the greenhouse for about 10 years. They started volunteering when Diann Beckman oversaw the greenhouse programs at Dakota College. The Garden Volunteers helped establish the pollinator garden. They work on seeding, transplanting, or assisting in planting flowers. Volunteering at the greenhouse has become a tradition among this local group of friends. “We like to do things that get us out of the house and we all enjoy the gardening aspect,” said Davis.

The Golden Service award goes to a DCB alum who has retired or is approaching the traditional retirement age after a successful career or exceptional achievement. This individual’s work must have contributed to society in a beneficial way and has set a good example for their community. Howard Beyer, former owner of Ace Hardware until 2001, is the 2022 recipient of the Golden Service Award. Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Beyer’s second passion is supporting the Bottineau community. He served in the National Guard and volunteered as an EMT for Bottineau Ambulance. Active on several boards, Howard was a voice on the St. Andrew’s Hospital, bank board, and many of his church committees and boards.

Dakota College also acknowledges alumni athletes, coaches, staff and teams. The Hall of Fame inductee is an athlete that has competed or a non-athlete that has served in an athletic position for DCB. The award is based primarily upon the nominee’s participation while attending or serving DCB. The 2022 Hall of Fame recipients are two very deserving individuals; Wayne Johnson and Mike Getzloff.

Wayne Johnson, most recently known as the coach of the Ladyjack basketball team has a coaching career that spans a total of 52 years. Throughout his career, Coach J’s teams achieved 971 wins, 281 of those while he was at DCB with the Ladyjacks. He led the Ladyjacks to their third national tournament appearance in 2022. After serving as a faculty member and coach for 23 years at Dakota College, he retired in 2022. “Coach J” has touched numerous lives in his decades of coaching.

Mike Getzloff has been a part of the DCB Athletic Department for the past 35 years, dating back to 1987. Mike has spent time as the DCB baseball assistant coach and head coach. He led the Lumberjack baseball team to four consecutive N.D. Conference titles in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. The Jacks went on to win conference tournament championships in 1988, 1989 and 1990. Getzloff has served as both the assistant coach and head coach multiple times for softball. He has served as co-interim athletic director in his time at DCB. In 2018, Getzloff recruited a softball team for the 2019 season which set several records including a season high wins and a trip to the NJCAA DIII National tournament. Getzloff is also an all-around supporter of Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletic.
