PTSD Awareness Walk set for June 23

June 27 is National PTSD Awareness Day. In 2010, former U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad attributed a day to Staff Sgt. Joseph A. Biel, 36, who took his own life in 2007. June 27 was Biel’s birthday and is observed every year in memorial.

On Thursday, June 23, The Minot Vet Center is holding its 4th annual PTSD Awareness Walk at Oak Park Shelter 7 in Minot, starting at 6 p.m. There will be more than 20 information booths, yard games, children’s games and a hot dog cookout with snacks and beverages provided by the Forgotten Warriors Motorcycle club and the Minot Elks. In past years the walk has been successful with upwards of 200 walkers.

“PTSD does not just happen to those who’ve worn the uniform or those who currently wear the uniform, it can happen to your neighbor, your grandmother, your cousin,” said Ric Gutierrez of the Minot Vet Center. He said PTSD can happen to anyone.

The Minot Vet Center has created an oasis for local veterans to convene, relax and heal. Among many of the services offered are counseling. Whether it is re-assimilation, PTSD, suicide prevention, substance abuse or finding comradery this is the place to visit. For veterans, their families and caregivers, the center has existed in Minot for over 40 years. Veterans may find solace with the professional staff and surroundings of the Minot Vet Center.

The Minot Vet Center has regular group meetings, group activities, luncheons and a relaxation room donated by the Forgotten Warriors motorcycle club. The Vet Center also provides donated eye glasses for re-use at no cost to veterans.
