New Town college forgives additional student debt

NEW TOWN – Nueta, Hidatsa, Sahnish College in New Town forgave in August 2021 more than $200,000 in debt for students who were enrolled in classes from fall 2020 through summer 2021. Recently, the college announced plans to forgive an additional $1.3 million in outstanding student balances for those enrolled from January 2014 through December 2019. Fall 2021 student balances are not included in the debt forgiveness plan.

College costs are financed through Federal Pell Grants and other grants and scholarships.

“While NHSC does not offer student loans, the school does offer payment plans for student balances. In the past, students were allowed to register for classes if they had outstanding balances, but only if it was less than $2,500. This debt forgiveness will allow them an opportunity to enroll in classes again or simply provide relief from student debt so they can start anew,” said Twyla Baker, NHSC president. “Our students persisted and thrived in the face of COVID-19, but it was clear to our leadership and Board of Directors that our students continue to be significantly impacted by the worldwide pandemic.”
