Mark Halvorson, curator of Collections Research for the State Historical Society of North Dakota who is originally from Rugby, spotted this sign when he was leaving the Capitol grounds in Bismarck for lunch on Friday. The sign is attached to one of the street lights. “Some gophers have taken up residence in Atkinson Park, which is connected to the Capitol grounds by a walkway beneath State Street (U.S. Highway 83). Our friendly flickertails may have migrated from the U.S. 83 or I-94 right of way, in search of food,” Halvorson said. He said the sign is “just a fun expression by someone recognizing our unofficial state animal.”
