Minot Walk for Autism to raise funds, awareness

Creating an awareness of autism while raising money for an important program is the goal of the fourth annual “Be the Light” Minot Walk for Autism Saturday, April 24, in Oak Park.

The walk begins at 10 a.m. Registration is free and walkers are encouraged to register online at eventbrite.com. Long-sleeved “Be the Light” shirts are available for purchase through early registration.

Late registrants can sign up beginning at 9:30 a.m. April 24 at Oak Park’s Shelter 7.

The event kicks off with a Kids Fun Run, followed by the community walk. Hitchin Kitchen will have a food truck on site, and there will be a cookie sale and donations taken to raise money for the Find Safe Program.

Find Safe is a program to reduce injury and death of individuals with dementia and developmental disabilities who go missing. The program works in conjunction with Project Lifesaver, North Dakota law enforcement and first responders. Project Lifesaver provides the necessary radio technologies and training for program participants so if a participant goes missing, first responders can locate the individual.

More information is available by calling the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities at Minot State University at 1-800-233-1737.

The Minot Center for Pediatric Therapy is hosting the upcoming autism walk and posting any updates to its Facebook page.

“We are just trying to create a sense of community and family,” said co-organizer Kylee Geer with the center. “We just keep bringing families together to create that sense of belonging and support.”

The event has grown over the years, and Geer and co-organizer Shannon Schmidt expect about 200 people for this year’s walk. Participants walked in 2020 but on an individual basis due to the pandemic.
