Aaron Williams, Burlington, sentenced to 18 months for assaulting officer, felon in possession of firearm

Aaron Douglas Williams, 36, Burlington, was sentenced on Tuesday in district court in Minot to three years in prison, with a requirement that he serve 18 months, for assaulting an officer who was arresting him on outstanding warrants on March 21 of this year at the Dakota Lounge in Minot and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a Class C felony, on Jan. 10, 2020.

Williams will receive credit for 71 days already served in the Ward County Jail, plus 10 days off his sentence for good behavior. The sentence is concurrent with sentences on other charges, including Class A misdemeanor providing false information to law enforcement and Class A misdemeanor possession of methamphetamine.

The state agreed to dismiss other charges against Williams under the terms of a plea deal, including Class A misdemeanor resisting arrest, a Class B felony burglary charge dating back to Jan. 19, 2020, a Class A misdemeanor violation of a no contact order charge dating back to Feb. 16, 2020 and a Class B misdemeanor driving with a suspended license charge dating back to Feb. 16, 2020.

The state revoked Williams’ probation on a 2016 Class C felony bail jumping charge, a Class B felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance charge and a possession of drug paraphernalia charge dating back to 2018. The sentences on those charges are concurrent with his sentence for assaulting the officer and possession of the firearm.

According to the probable cause affidavit in the assault on a police officer case, a dispatcher received a tip from someone at the Dakota Lounge that Williams was there playing the slot machines. Police went to the lounge and one of the officers watched the back exit and the other made contact with Williams, who refused to give his name and then gave police a fake name. According to police, he became aggressive, refused to put his hands behind his back and then moved toward an exit. Officers ordered him to get on the ground and stop fighting and he did not. Police officers warned him multiple times and then tased him when he would not stop fighting. They gained control of Williams, handcuffed him and put him in the back of the patrol vehicle and searched him. The search turned up a plastic baggie filled with suspected meth in Williams’ pocket. One of the officers sustained a cut on her right forearm during the fight and Williams had a bruise under his left eye and a cut on his nose.
