Tax bills: No break for Surrey school district this year

No tax break in Surrey school district this year

Tax statements are in the mail to Ward County property owners, and Surrey School District property owners can expect the biggest change.

The school levy of $1,174 on a $200,000 home is up from $914 this past year.

The district reports its taxpayers received a break this past year after Ward County declined to accept all the district’s submitted certificates of levy, reducing its desired revenue by about $160,000. The current increase in levy results from the need to go to the maximum-allowed levy to recover a portion of the loss.

Ward County Auditor Marisa Haman, who was deputy auditor at the time, said the Surrey school had submitted various levy updates. Following the advice of the State’s Attorney, the office declined to accept the last update due to arriving after the submission deadline.

The consolidated tax in the city of Surrey is up almost 6% as a result of the school levy increase. A lower city levy offset some of the increase.

Minot property owners are seeing largely lower levies.

Minot’s consolidated levy is 332.32 mills, down from 337.7 mills in last year’s statements. That comes to a total tax bill of $2,991 for the owner of a $200,000 home in Minot Public School District, down from $3,039 this past year. The consolidated levy includes state, county, city, parks and school taxes.

The Ward County mill levy hasn’t changed from the past year. The owner of a $200,000 home would pay $557 to the county. Minot residents pay a somewhat lower levy, $534, because the library levy is not included.

Taxes to the City of Minot on a $200,000 home are down from $1,097 to $1,080. Taxes to Minot Park District on that home would be about $384, or down about $5. Taxes to Minot Public Schools would be $984, down about $18.

Minot property owners in the Nedrose School District also are seeing lower levies. Nedrose school taxes are down about 1.8%, while South Prairie school taxes are down 7.5%. That results in a consolidated tax for Minot city residents in those districts of $3,230 in Nedrose and $3,307 in South Prairie.

Taxes are affected by changes in property valuations, however, and Minot residents may have seen adjustments. The median home value in Minot went from $179,000 to $183,000 this past year, according to the City of Minot.

The consolidated tax on a $179,000 home in Minot Public School District this past year was $2,720. The consolidated tax on a $183,000 home for this coming year is $2,737. In the Nedrose district, the tax was $2,938 on a $179,000 home this past year and now is $2,955 on a $183,000 home. A South Prairie taxpayer in Minot paid $3,082 on a $179,000 home and will pay $3,026 on a $183,000 home.

In addition to statements that will be arriving in the mail, tax statements are available online at wardnd.com.
