ND senators back new Supreme Court justice

Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, both R-ND, issued words of support for the newest Supreme Court justice Amy Coney Barrett following their Senate votes to confirm her Thursday.

“As both a law professor and a judge, Justice Barrett has shown a deep respect for the Constitution and a commitment to upholding the law rather than trying to legislate from the bench,” Hoeven said. “During the confirmation process, she made it clear that she will be impartial and fair, and that she understands the proper role of a judge. Justice Barrett has the right judicial philosophy for North Dakota and our nation, and we congratulate her on her confirmation to serve as a Justice on the United States Supreme Court.”

“Today, we did the job we were sent here to do,” Cramer said. “History will look back on today as the day we confirmed one of the most impressive judicial nominees we’ve seen in a generation. She is a brilliant, virtuous jurist who is ready to serve our country on the nation’s highest court. I am honored to have cast my vote to confirm her.”

Congressman Kelly Armstrong, R-ND, also issued his congratulations to Barrett on Facebook, calling her an “exceptionally qualified jurist.”

Zach Raknerud, The Democrat challenger for Amstrong’s House seat said he is concerned about the confirmation of Barrett.

“The judicial branch has played a part in creating the reverse funnel of wealth we are witness to today. Big business interests have spent significant amounts of money to attain as much political power as possible. That includes influence in the judiciary sphere,” he said. “Rulings limiting the ability of citizens to band together in class-action lawsuits against corporate wrongdoing, rulings that quell the bargaining power of workers and force tens of millions into mandatory arbitration, rulings that continually expand the presence of dark money in our political system, these things and more are only set to accelerate with the confirmation of Justice Barrett.”
