Madison Keane, Minot, charged with driving into man with vehicle in August

Madison Grace Keane, 22, Minot, is accused of running into a man with her vehicle on Aug. 24, striking him in the elbow and leaving him with a three-inch burn on his arm. The alleged victim refused medical treatment after the incident, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court.

Keane is charged in district court in Minot with Class C felony aggravated assault committed with a dangerous weapon.

The charge against Keane was not filed until Oct. 1, more than a month after the incident allegedly occurred.

Keane made an initial appearance on the charge on Monday in district court via audio from the Ward County Jail before Judge Richard Hagar. The camera was not working at the jail or in the courtroom on Monday so cases were conducted over audio only. Each inmate had to agree to make an initial appearance over audio. Their rights were played to them earlier in the day using a recording.

Hagar set bond for Keane at $5,000 cash, with a requirement that Keane post 10 percent of that, or $500. Hagar also ordered Keane to have no contact with the alleged victim and to stay in touch with a pilot pre-trial services program as one of the conditions of bond. He set a preliminary hearing date in court for Dec. 17.

At the initial appearance, Ward County Assistant State’s Attorney Ethan Lee said that Keane had allegedly lured the man to her apartment on Aug. 24 and that when the man arrived, he found a pile of items burning and Keane then allegedly struck him with her vehicle. Lee asked for bond to be set at $10,000 with a requirement that Keane post 10 percent.

Keane’s attorney, David Spencer, who appeared in court via conference call, said there are some discrepancies in the stories and the alleged victim had reportedly been standing in the middle of the road at the time of the incident. Spencer said Keane has a minimal criminal history and he doesn’t believe she is a danger to the man or to society at large. Spencer had asked for bond to be set at 10 percent of $2,500.

Hagar compromised between the two bond requests with the $5,000 cash, post 10 percent, order. He set a preliminary hearing for Keane for Dec. 17.
