Enrollment is down at Williston State College.

According to information provided by the college, 959 students are enrolled this semester compared with 1,132 students in the fall of 2019. This represents a 16 percent decrease.

Williston State College John Miller attributed the decline to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Williston State College fall 2020 enrollment reflects a decrease of 16% in head count from the fall of 2019. 959 students are registered for classes in the fall 2020 semester according to census totals released Tuesday, Sept. 22. This is a decrease from the census total of 1132 students in the fall of 2019.

“There is no doubt the COVID-19 pandemic has affected our recruitment efforts and resulting fall enrollment,” he said. “Traditionally, the spring is our primary recruitment season for incoming freshmen and students interested in dual credit coursework, and when regional high schools were closed last spring due to COVID-19, it limited our ability to reach prospective students.”

Online courses saw an increase in student numbers by almost 10 percent.

Programs in the trade and industry divison showed increases, particularly in IT, business management, and transportation, according to Williston State.

Enrollment numbers are released after the fourth week of classes.
