New judge appointed to hear latest case against Brent Castleman

A new judge has been appointed to hear charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal trespass against Brent Castleman, 52, Minot.

The Supreme Court appointed Northwest District Court Judge Kirsten Sjue to hear this particular case after all of the judges in the North Central Judicial District and Northeast District Court Judge Joshua Hurly all recused themselves.

Castleman, who is representing himself in this particular case, had demanded a change of judge because he didn’t believe North Central District Court Judge Gary Lee could be impartial.

Sjue held a bond hearing for Castleman on Monday and scheduled a preliminary hearing for April 15.

Castleman is also facing a slew of other charges in district court in Minot, among them felony child abuse and stalking. Hurly was appointed to hear some of the cases after all of the judges in the North Central Judicial District recused themselves earlier. Hurly revoked bond for Castleman last week after a prosecutor told him of Castleman’s arrest for trespass and alleged assault of a police officer while resisting arrest on Feb. 28. One of the stalking cases is before North Central District Court Judge Doug Mattson.
