Human Rights Film Festival to discuss human trafficking

A discussion about the human trafficking crisis in North Dakota will take place in Minot at the Oak Park Theater during the North Dakota Human Rights Film Festival. The festival will take place for the first time in Minot on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the festival begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $10 per person and $3 for students and seniors ages 55 and up.

The feature-length narrative film “Honey Bee” will have its North Dakota premiere as part of the festival. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ramu Rau, the film follows the story of Natalie ‘Honey Bee’ Sorensen. Portrayed by actress Julia Sarah Stone, Natalie is an underage truck-stop prostitute trapped in a human trafficking ring.

Controlled by her boyfriend who sells Natalie’s body for money, Natalie is unable to escape the ring until she is transplanted into foster care in a remote northern Ontario community. Removed from the ring, Natalie is forced to confront her identity and to confront the manipulation of her boyfriend who entices her back into the world of human trafficking. The film stars Martha Plimpton (“The Good Wife,” “Parenthood” and “The Goonies”), Michelle McLeod (“Chante”) and Peter Outerbrige (“Other Limits”).

Following the premiere of “Honey Bee,” a discussion about human trafficking in North Dakota will take place. The conversation will feature voices of: Maria Berlin, executive director at Hispanic Have a Voice; Tara Bjornson, assistant director at Minot Domestic Violence Crisis Center; James Falcon, president of Magic City Equality; Brandi Jude, executive director at Invisible Innocence; and Annete Mennem, director of the Native American Center at Minot State University.
