Couple charged with child neglect, theft offenses

Christian Joel Henry, 27, and his wife, Alicia Anne Henry, 26, both Minot, are accused of getting into a fight, breaking their television, and then going out and leaving their three young children home alone overnight while they were out stealing on Saturday.

One of the items Alicia Henry allegedly bought at Walmart using a stolen credit card was a new 43-inch TV.

Meanwhile, according to police, their 5-year-old daughter woke up to find her parents still gone and walked more than a block on Saturday morning in blizzard like conditions to look for help. The couple’s 2-year-old and baby were left alone in the residence. Methamphetamine pipes were within reach of the children in the bathroom.

The Henrys are each charged in district court in Minot with three counts of Class C felony child neglect as well as Class C felony conspiracy to commit unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, Class C felony conspiracy to commit unauthorized use of personal identifying information, and two counts of Class C felony possession of stolen property as well as Class A misdemeanor possession of methamphetamine paraphernalia.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Alicia Henry had been working at a Cenex station Friday night and allegedly stole a credit card from a co-worker’s purse that was located behind the counter. A short time later, at 9:51 p.m. Friday, Christian Henry allegedly used that stolen credit card to buy $568 worth of goods, including two cell phones and a $200 gift card, at Walmart.

The 5-year-old girl later told police that her parents had gotten into a loud argument that night and broke their television and then left her and her siblings alone in the residence. At about 9 a.m. on Saturday, the child went out in the cold, snowy conditions and walked over a block to look at for help. An adult there called police and reported that she had been found. Police determined that she lived at Henrys’ address at 600 4th Avenue NW. They took the child home and found the two younger children unattended. While they were taking care of the three children and waiting for Ward County Social Services to arrive, police saw methamphetamine paraphernalia in plain view in a bathroom in the residence.

Meanwhile, Alicia Henry was allegedly out using another stolen credit card to purchase a television on Saturday morning. Alicia Henry had allegedly stolen a backpack that had been left in a shopping cart near the exit door at Cashwise Foods. The backpack contained a store employee’s wallet, several credit cards, a driver’s license and Social Security card. Alicia Henry is seen on the grocery store video stealing the backpack and a short time later is seen on the Walmart store video using one of the stolen credit cards to purchase a television for $266.

Christian Henry is suspected of breaking into someone’s car and stealing a silver amp, a gray box with two 12-inch kickers, and a two set engine rebuild kit. The owner of the items spotted police by one of the Henrys’ two vehicles on Saturday and stopped to tell police that this was the vehicle he had seen right before his vehicle was broken into. Police let the man look inside Henry’s vehicle and he found his stolen items in the car.

Alicia Henry had returned to her residence shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday morning in the 2006 Dodge Caravan, while police were still at the residence with the children. The TV she had purchased at Walmart using the stolen credit card was in the back of her vehicle.

Both the Henrys were arrested.

After Christian Henry was arrested, he was searched and police found stolen credit cards belonging to two separate people.

Police then obtained a search warrant for the Henrys’ vehicles and their residence. Inside the residence, they found several glass meth pipes in the bathroom.

The Henrys were scheduled to make an initial appearance in district court on Tuesday. They had originally been scheduled to appear on Monday, but the Ward County State’s Attorney’s Office wasn’t able to prepare the paperwork listing all their charges in time for them to see the judge Monday afternoon and they spent another night in jail.

Judge Gary Lee set bond for Christian Henry at $50,000 cash or corporate surety and at $25,000 cash or corporate surety for Alicia Henry. Christian Henry was out on bond in other open cases, while Alicia Henry was not. He had been charged with terrorizing for allegedly threatening a convenience store clerk with a knife in August and was charged earlier this month with misdemeanor possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lee also ordered that any visitation with the three children must be supervised by Social Services. Ward County State’s Attorney Roza Larson remarked in court on Tuesday that the children are now being very well cared for.

The couple were ordered to stay away from the alleged theft victims.
