Chauncey Johnson, Minot, pleads guilty to punching fellow inmate in fight over who would claim contraband

Chauncey Lakeante Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty on Thursday in district court in Minot to punching his cellmate during a fight at the jail on Oct. 2

Johnson pleaded guilty to Class B misdemeanor simple assault and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, with all suspended but the 15 days he has already served, and placed on unsupervised probation for six months.

Judge Gary Lee also ordered Johnson to pay $250 in court costs.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed with the court, Johnson and his cellmate were in the recreational area at the jail because correctional officers were searching their cell for contraband.

The two men then got into an argument over which of them should take responsibility for the contraband items in the jail cell. Johnson punched the other man in the mouth with a closed right fist and then in the cheek with a closed left fist. The victim declined medical attention.

Johnson is currently being held at the jail on a Class B felony charge of conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine.
