Air Force investigating illegal drugs found at missile facility

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE – The Air Force is conducting an ongoing investigation into an incident on Oct. 9 when suspected illegal drugs were found in the above-ground facilities of a missile alert facility in the Minot missile field, according to Minot Air Force Base officials.

The Associated Press reported the drug was an undisclosed amount of marijuana.

There is no indication that illegal drugs were found below ground near any missile operator, Air Force officials said.

A missile alert facility is the main control facility for the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“We take this matter seriously and will investigate this fully as this is an unacceptable breach of Air Force standards. This is not indicative of our airmen, or our mission to defend the United States and deter our adversaries,” Air Force officials said in a news release issued Wednesday.

Minot AFB is one of two B-52 bomber bases and oversees 150 Minuteman III ICBMs in the Minot missile field.
